Cities and culture in Madrid
The classic mistake with a city trip is filling it up. This page does the opposite: few sights per day, a plan you can walk, and meals as part of the itinerary instead of the gap between two museums. Madrid is walked, and what people remember is what sits between the monuments: the terraces, the market and the tables. Two well planned days already get you the historic centre, the Prado and a neighbourhood of tapas.
Central Madrid is covered between the metro and on foot, and the plan changes depending on whether you arrive with children or with a taste for museums. The Prado and the Reina Sofia are half a day each: pick one. At night the terraces of Chueca and La Latina fill up, and the San Miguel market works as good fast food when the day has been long. Three nights is enough to enjoy it; with two, you rush. Malasaña and Las Letras work well for eating and for walking back to the hotel, and the Retiro is the green plan when the weather holds. In summer, the afternoon is saved by the indoor museums and by the terraces with shade.

Frequently asked questions
How many cities is the right number?
Two or three cities, with three or four days in each. Putting four cities into a week is a fast tour: you see the centre of each one and enjoy none. If the plan comes up short, the chat cuts cities before it cuts days.
Does the plan pick the museums?
It picks the ones that make sense on the route and fit with the rest of the day, not a list of the ten most famous. If a museum takes half a day, the plan treats it as the plan of the day, not as an extra between two visits.
How much does a trip to Madrid cost?
130–204 € per person per night in Madrid: 110 € for accommodation and 45 € for meals per day, based on engine price book. It is an estimate from the price book, not a quote.
