A three day plan: fitting food, a museum and some air

Three days are too few for almost everything and enough for a trip done well. The structure that works: one anchor per day, food inside it and real margin.

Three days are the sweet spot of the short trip: few enough days that you do not have to rush, many enough that everything is close. It is also where the mistake of squeezing a week of plan into it happens most often.

The difference is in the structure: a three day plan that works has one anchor per day, food inside the day and real margin.

One anchor per day

The anchor is the one thing that cannot move: the big museum, the market, the long excursion, the match. Everything else is arranged around it.

One anchor a day gives you three things: a clear direction, a pace that does not exhaust you, and a plan that still works if something runs late. If day three falls apart, the trip does not fall apart with it.

Food goes inside

The classic mistake in a three day plan is treating food as the gap between two visits. In a plan like that, lunch swallows the afternoon: you arrive at the wrong time, the square is full and you end up eating anything.

Better: decide where you eat each meal and put it in the plan like any other item. The market at eleven, lunch on the square at two, dinner in the neighbourhood you already walked through. The plan is the same, but food stops being a problem.

Air is an activity

In a three day plan, cities with lots of museums turn into a season of hiking between museums. Book half an hour of open air somewhere: a walk by the river, a square with shade, a viewpoint.

It is not wasted time: it is what makes the rest of the plan sustainable.

The margin on the last day

The last day is always the weakest: nobody wants to go home, the bags are half packed and nobody has energy for the full plan. Make it shorter on purpose and put what matters most at the front.

It is the most expensive mistake: saving the visit you have been putting off for months for the last day.

The minimum version

If you keep one idea from this post, make it this: three days, three anchors, three decided meals and some margin. Everything else is decoration, and decoration is the first thing to cut when something does not fit.
